E.T. Full Moon Midnight Marathon 51K Race Recap

The E.T. Full Moon Marathon (51K in my case) did not disappoint this year. Thinking about it, it was also great last year too, well, with the the exception of me dropping out around mile 6 during my half.  The gist of this point-to-point race, and also what makes it really unique, is the midnight start along Extraterrestrial Highway in the dark.  A few hundred runners donning alien inspired costumes, carrying glow sticks and wearing headlamps show up at the Hardrock Hotel in Vegas and get shuttled to the start, more than an hour away to Rachel, NV.   We are dropped off on the pitch-black highway, lit only by the gadgets we bring along, and run straight to the finish which just so happens to be near Area 51 at the A’Le’Inn (Alien Inn). Oh, did I almost forget that we also get glow-in-the-dark medals?!  So cool!

This year I chose to run the 51K and use it as a training run for my ultras coming up in October (100k and 100mi). My only real concern was getting revenge this year when I had just experienced a calf strain the week before. As we headed down ET HWY, I already had to stop before the first mile because my calf started cramping. I was so frustrated, worried about getting to the first aid station two miles away so I could try to hitch a ride to the finish and wait for my friends.  As soon as I stopped, I stretched and then headed out again. The cramp let up and I was able to continue running feeling more scared than pain.  Luckily for me, I ended up running with someone from around the 9th mile all the way to 23 before he had to turn around and head in to the finish for the full marathon — I had to keep going.

When I rolled around to the final aid station, I found out I was the second female and I also noticed there was another one pretty close behind me. By this point, I didn’t feel like racing but I did want to place so I tried to run comfortably and consistently at a 9:00 mile pace to the finish in hopes she would not catch me.  I came in to the finish with a 4:56:06 time and finished fourth overall (second female). I was pretty satisfied, a little achy from running on the road (and not trails) and happy to have a new distance PR on my record!

Here’s me, Marathon Mitch and Ash – do you think we’re wearing enough green? I think not!

Going with the green alien theme, I customized these neon green hoodies an alien-type font

and blue glitter. Loved them!

Here is a close up of the tanks I made for the race. All the

stars glowed in the dark and the blue text says,

“RUN FASTER THAN THE ALIENS.”

Uncle Mike was also a winner!

  1. I ran the half last year. Are you running it again this year?

    • Hello! It is a really great and fun race and I would love to do it again but it doesn’t fit into my schedule this year (unfortunately). Are you running it?

      • No, me either. I live in NC, so it takes a lot if planning to run that race. And $$$ to get there.
