Gastrocnemius, cellulite & chocolate…exciting stuff!
Geez, I am on a roll with my blogging – let’s see how long I can keep this up? The truth is that I always have things to blog about but I get lazy and then the moment passes.
First of all, I have been experiencing a weird feeling on my left calf. I didn’t think too much of it until yesterday when I noticed it was significantly more painful. I iced last night, slept with compression socks and then iced again this morning but the pain was still there and I was really, really worried. I called my coach who immediately told me to get a deep tissue sports massage so I left work early to get worked on. The massage was sooo painful! Almost immediately I was told that it was a muscle spasm. We spent one full hour just working on my gastrocnemius muscle and it just wouldn’t let up. Of course I am all worried because the timing is so bad! My coach thinks I am dehydrated and depleted of minerals – she is probably right though because even though I am working my ass off with all this training, I am totally neglecting my normal diet. I don’t drink enough water and my bf is always telling me to drink more. Last week I had major headaches and my tongue felt really weird and dry and then I remembered that I hadn’t had much to drink over the past few days. Crazy huh? True. Also, I am putting in around 45 hours a week in at work and always short on time. It is rare that I have anything decent for breakfast and dinner (lately anyway). I eat a good lunch but then I just fall asleep with an empty stomach. Heck, when I eat at home, I do it standing up. Regardless of what is going on with my calf, my habits must change! I am going to try to prepare my meals on Sunday for the week ahead. Let’s just hope this spasm thing goes away ASAP! I took today off and am going to rest tomorrow too. Fingers crossed!!!
OK…enough thinking about that! I finally got my Boston Marathon stuff! So excited! I assume I shouldn’t wear it until Boston – right? I am a little disappointed with the shorts, I ordered a small and they seem a little snug. I think I need to try them on again to make sure I am not crazy. Either way, the colors rock – lime green is one of my faves (behind grass green and then neon pink)!
I also have been stockpiling some things I have purchased but haven’t had a chance to try out so I thought I should do it soon. I got this REALLY cute hot pink tech shirt from Target for $9.99! Yeah, I only went in for toilet paper and came out with loads of stuff but I thought it was a deal! The color is perfect and I can’t wait to wear it. I found these little wrist thingys from Gap Body a while back. They are made from a fabric similar to running tights and they have a little pocket to hold your key (or whatever else you need to put in there. They were only $5.50 each when I bought two. I can’t wait to try them.
The other day I posted on DM about socks. I am desperate to find socks that will not give me blisters. I swear by Feeture socks – the pink tabs. Not only are they super cute and are a “no show,” but they also have a tab that keeps the sock from slipping down over the heel. They kind of remind me of those pompom socks I wore as a kid except there are no pompoms. Only recently I have been noticing blisters on the balls of my feet and under/in between my toes. I think the fabric makes my feet slide around inside my shoes but I am not completely sure. I only have this problem during long runs. I had so many sock suggestions from you guys and I am going to try most of them – most notably the drymax and Smartwool brands. Today after my treatment I headed over to Runnergy and picked up a pair of black drymax. They were expensive — $9.00 for one pair! I am going to try them this Sunday during my last long run (15 miles) and see how they feel. I hope they work because my laundry list of things to take care of before the race is getting pretty long!
I still am not sure what I am going to wear for LA Marathon. I always buy a new outfit for my races (marathons only) but I always have trouble picking something out. Last year I felt like a boy with my 2XU compression shorts and bra so I was hoping for something a little more colorful yet similar in style. I scoured Nike, Lululemon, Adidas and a few other brands but wasn’t really impressed with anything I saw. I also tried on some biker shorts at Runnergy a few weeks ago but the lengths were a little too short and they showed too much cellulite on my legs. Seriously. Today I did order some Adidas shorts – they are identical to the biker looking shorts that I got for Boston except they are all black. They have a 4” inseam so no worries of cottage cheese! HAHA. I ordered an extra small for extra compression and should get them next week. I also have a few long Nike running tops (longer type sport bras) that I have had in my closet since last year that still have tags! I was supposed to wear them in my 12/12 quest but we all know that didn’t happen! I guess I can consider those too but I have to go around all the running stores this weekend and see what is out there first before I make any decision. If my calf is still annoying me, I may have to wear my pink CEP compression socks. Geez…so many factors!
Oh yeah, today I got a nice little surprise when I went to the grocery store – Isreali chocolate. I love this brand and I didn’t have to go to the special market just to get it. Super yum!

Hi Trace~ Keep us posted on the calf. My left leg has been giving me problems all week. Am going to try to run on it this afternoon. Was really bad this past Monday on the ‘mill. Made it 1 mile then had to stop. Keep your fingers and toes crossed. It’s getting too close. Love the Boston gear!!! 🙂

Ack. Stop. Read this: If the issue is a sore muscle due to overuse…ice won’t help and may only make things worse. You want to keep that gastroc warm, moving, stretched and massaged. You can massage it yourself- or enjoy the talents of a pro. Preferably both. You need blood flow for the muscle to heal, and you need to keep it massaged and stretch so that as it’s healing, it doesn’t build up tight muscle knots. Ice is for a different type of injury. There are still plenty of highly qualified and experienced physical therapists that swear by ice. Personally- I think they’re ‘old school’.

Want another sock suggestion? Balega’s! they make really low ones with a thick spot on the heel so that they don’t slip into the shoe, and stay ‘invisible’. ~$10.

I am sorry to hear about your calf Trace. The same exact thing happened to me three weeks ago. It was from getting out of my vitamin supplement routine and too much caffeine / dehydration. Stay disciplined and take care of it and you should be good to go in under a week. I ran 25 miles in one day a week after the incident. I have a feeling you’ll be okay. Keep us posted.

Can you make some suggestions to someone who’s brand new to running (after running several 5k’s ten years ago)? How long do I need to walk in order to start running? And how much can I start with on a run?

Assuming you are considering marathons, Jeff Galloway has some good run/walk programs for beginning marathoners and I actually referred to his program in 2006 when I ran a 4:16 marathon in LA. Run/walk programs are very popular and LA Roadrunners and LA Leggers have groups too. You should check it out. Thanks for stopping by!!
